As policies for timing traffic signal change intervals are based on laws regarding the purpose of the yellow light of the traffic signal, there are substantial differences between individual state laws. The focus of this article is to review the basic policies for traffic signal change interval timing, the current timing practices based on these policies, and their implications for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
