Abstract
The effect of consistent and inconsistent feedback on rates of inappropriate solicitation of teacher attention by behavior problem students were examined using a reversal design. The use of highly inconsistent feedback involving a combination of reprimands and permissive responses was associated with high rates of solicitation. The use of consistent reprimands resulted in decreased rates of solicitation. Rates of appropriate handraising were not affected by the manipulations. This pattern of results was replicated when the frequency of reprimands as well as ratio of feedback type were controlled.
