Abstract
Abstract A central issue in the public concern for the homeless has been estimating the size of the homeless population. A national census to determine this population in the United States has not yet been carried out. At present, there is little information on the incidence of new cases of homelessness in a given time, nor are there accurate statistics on the total number of Americans who have ever experienced an episode of homelessness. Because homelessness is often intermittent, interspersed with episodes of living in low-cost transient, institutional, or family settings, the number of people homeless on a single night will be considerably lower than the number of people who experience homelessness at some time over an entire year.
