Abstract
The properties of the microsomal ATPase from various tissues have been investigated. In muscle and brain this enzyme is activated by Na+ ions. The enzyme obtained from brain is predominantly present in a heavy microsomal fraction. This fraction is practically free from mitochondria and mitochondrial fragments. The ATPase shows no specificity for nucleoside triphosphates, but reacts only slowly with diphosphates. The effect of several inhibitors on the brain microsomal ATPase is also studied. The ATPase is inhibited by low concentrations of calcium, pyridine aldoxime dodecyl iodide, and deoxycholate. Amytal, Atebrin, chlorpromazine and oligomycin are also inhibitory to various degrees. The data presented are discussed from the standpoint of the reaction mechanism and the physiological significance of the Na+-stimulated ATPase in active transport.
