Abstract
Dietary restraint was assessed in a group of normal students using Polivy and Herman's Restraint Scale (RS) and the new Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ). The results suggested that the DEBQ will prove a useful instrument which avoids some of the drawbacks of the RS. Failures of completion of the RS were common and resulted from low-restraint Ss being unable to give the required information on the Weight Fluctuation items, thus compromising the validity of the RS as a measure of restraint.
