Abstract
The functions of human cingulate cortex, like those of many limbic and neocortical regions, remain poorly defined. Localization of neurological functions is based on observations following spontaneous and surgically induced lesions, electrical stimulation, and by patterns of connections with other cortical and subcortical areas. The sum of this data is often an approximate outline, not a faithful portrait. Cingulate cortex is, however, a relatively privileged site by neurological standards, since it has been the subject of extensive studies with elective surgical resections and electrical stimulation procedures.
