Abstract
The goals of this chapter are to frame the evolution of interfaces for informations seeking provide a status report for current research and development, and suggest research direction. It discusses the fact that the tremendous and rapid advances in technology have driven the research on and development of user interfaces. The chapter is based on three generations: 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. Within the research and developement devoted to interfaces for information seeking, we focus specifically on conceptual interfaces and give only broad coverage to physical interfaces. The chapter is organized to provide a perspective on the mutually dependent advances of technology, research of information seeking, and human system interaction; provide a brief summary of developments in the first two generations of user interfaces that have been addressed in previous ARIST chapter; and then focus on the current third generation of interface development considered from multidisciplinary and interactivity perspectives.
