Insulin replaces serum as a stimulant of cell elongation in the cultured 6-day-old embryonic chick lens epithelium. Thus, cell elongation, which is characteristic of lens fiber differentiation, can now be studied under chemically defined conditions. This finding should facilitate further analyses of the mechanism of cell elongation.
