Abstract

Unto Others The Evolution and Psychology of Unselfish Behavior. Elliott Sober and David Sloan Wilson. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1998. 406 pp. $29.95. ISBN 0-674-93046-0. The authors of Unto Others present an evolutionary argument for unselfish behavior as the product of group selection, coupled with a "completely different" section on psychological altruism. They stress a pluralistic approach to altruism, and to levels of selection. The reviewer finds the book more focused on the debates than on the science.
