Abstract
The effect of PGE1 was studied on the cutaneous vasculature of 16 guinea pigs 6 rabbits 8 healthy human subjects and 20 patients with various dermatoses. PGE1 was found to be a potent vasodilator after injection in guinea pig and human skin. It was not absorbed through intact epidermis. PGE1 in human skin results in prolonged erythema for up to 10 hours. The erythema is blocked by norepinephrine and epinephrine but is unaffected by anesthetics. In patients with atopic dermatitis PGE1 appears to have a vasodilatory effect in contrast to other pharmacological agents which have little or paradoxical effect. PGF2 had no effect on rabbit and guinea pig skin.
