Abstract

The chemistry of organic compounds containing the covalently-bound nitrate group is reviewed with the purpose of summarizing the state of knowledge concerning their importance in atmospheric chemistry. Information pertinent to the conduct of research is contained in sections titled Nomenclature; Preparation, Properties and Spectroscopic Data; and Measurement Techniques. Information specific to atmospheric chemistry is contained in sections titled Atmospheric Formation Processes, Atmospheric Removal Processes, Atmospheric Observations, and Modeling Studies. Areas of potential importance and areas of major uncertainty are identified throughout to provide focus for future research activities.
