Abstract

Loneliness seems to have assumed second-class-citizen status as a mental health issue, especially with the intensified focus on major mental illness in contemporary psychiatric research. Typically, you cannot even find it in the index of most psychiatric textbooks. But loneliness in relation to depression is somewhat analogous to the relationship of near-poverty to poverty. Most deliberations on the economic situation of older adults today do not look just at the number of individuals below the poverty line; they also look at those near poverty or within 125% of poverty, since their numbers are significant and their challenges not dissimilar to those at poverty level.
