Abstract
The model predicts that use of lamotrigine would be associated with an overall reduction in use of other direct medical care resources (hospitalizations, outpatient visits, diagnostic and laboratory tests, and surgery). For a 10-year time horizon, the estimated cost-effectiveness ratio is $6.9 per seizure-free day gained. The model provides a flexible framework to analyze the effect of new antiepileptic drugs.

EpilepsiaUptake and Costs of Care for Epilepsy: Findings from a U.K. Regional Study
208 Citations1998Ann Jacoby, Debbie Buck +4 more
Both direct and indirect costs of epilepsy care are investigated and the direct costs are measured and valued and the indirect costs are valued.
EpilepsiaRelationship Between Seizure Frequency and Costs and Quality of Life of Outpatients with Partial Epilepsy in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom
134 Citations1997Ben van Hout, Dennis D. Gagnon +7 more
The relationship between seizure frequency and both health care costs and quality of life (QOL) was investigated in a retrospective, cross‐sectional, multicenter study in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
NeurologyA double-blind, placebo-controlled study of Vigabatrin three g/day in patients with uncontrolled complex partial seizures
134 Citations1996Jacqueline A. French, Michael Mosier +3 more
It is indicated that 3 g/day vigabatrin is more effective than placebo as add-on therapy in patients with focal epilepsy whose complex partial seizures were difficult to control with established antiepilepsy drug therapy.

Journal of neurosurgeryA cost-effectiveness analysis of anterior temporal lobectomy for intractable temporal lobe epilepsy
87 Citations1997Joseph T. King, Michael R. Sperling +2 more
The present data indicate that ATL for treatment of intractable temporal lobe epilepsy is a cost-effective use of medical resources and critically dependent on postoperative seizure status and improvement in quality of life.
EpilepsiaCost‐Effectiveness of Anterotemporal Lobectomy in Medically Intractable Complex Partial Epilepsy
86 Citations1997John T. Langfitt
The value of high‐cost health technologies is being increasingly scrutinized by providers of health care and an understanding of the costs and outcomes of high-technology epilepsy care is required to ensure efficient resource allocation.
NeurologyThe impact of new antiepileptic drugs on the prognosis of epilepsy
81 Citations1996Matthew C. Walker, Josemir W. Sander
Assessment of new AEDs in newly diagnosed patients is possibly unethical as it involves denying patients known effective therapy and suggestions that there is a spontaneous remission rate of at least 30% for this group regardless of AED therapy are confounded.
NeurosurgeryDirect Intraoperative Measurement of Human Brain Temperature
56 Citations1997J. Gilbert Stone, Robert Goodman +3 more
Direct intraoperative measurement of human brain temperature is feasible and safe, but accuracy requires that the temperature sensor be inserted at least 2 cm into the cerebral cortex.
PubMedThe clinical efficacy of lamotrigine as an antiepileptic drug.
56 Citations1994John M. Pellock
Multiple studies and clinical usage have shown lamotrigine to be well tolerated, with patients reporting a sense of well-being during drug therapy, and the most frequently reported adverse events are CNS-associated side effects and rash.
