Abstract
A key need in the application of expert systems to structural engineering design is the ability to predict structural deformation and stresses in the absence of a quantitative model. The use of approximations and general rules for predicting deflections and moments forms a necessary part of the preliminary selection and design procedure. If a program is to aid in the synthesis of new configurations, a part of its knowledge must include the qualitative aspects of structural behavior. This paper discusses the application of a rule based approach to the prediction of deflections and moments in indeterminate beam structures. It is being implemented in an Intelligent Computer Aided Instruction (ICAI) program to critique proposed deflected shapes and moment diagrams.
