Editor's Note: In July, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) released a major position paper that examines the strategic roles institutional repositories serve for colleges and universities. What follows are excerpts from the paper (footnotes omitted) that introduce the concept and describe the essential elements of an institutional repository.
