Enzyme activities in liver and brain fractions from alcoholic and control rats

Abstract

Abstract 1. 1. Ethanol was administered to Wistar rats either by one intraperitoneal injection or with the drinking water during 4–8 weeks. Livers and brains of alcoholic and control rats were removed immediately after death, homogenized and fractionated. The following fractions were obtained: Homogenate, Mitochondrial + Lysosomal, Microsomal and Cytosolic fractions. 2. 2. β- d -Glucuronidase,† β - N -acetyl-d-glucosaminidase, succinate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase, 5'-nucleotidase and Na + -K + -Mg 2+ ATPase activities were determined in the above mentioned fractions. 3. 3. Some relative specific activities studied in the fractions from livers of alcoholic rats exhibited changes in their respective subcellular distribution in comparison with the control patterns. 4. 4. After ethanol administration (both orally and intraperitoneally), no significant variation has been found for the specific activity of each enzyme in the fractions from alcoholic rat livers and brains, in comparison with the controls. 5. 5. Generally, enzymes from brain fractions showed a more limited response to the ethanol effects than those from liver fractions.
