Abstract
Forty years since the publication of <it>The Theory of the Growth of the Firm</it>, Edith Penrose's contribution to economics and business studies is currently receiving increasing acknowledgement and appreciation. Her ideas arguably dominate recent thinking, at least on the issue of the theory of the firm and strategic management. This introductory paper presents Penrose's live and assesses her contribution and influence so far.
