The Measurement of Dependence by Questionnaire

Abstract

This paper is presented in three parts. Part I considers the construct of dependence, its composition, and its relationship to depression and to dependent personality disorder. The implications of its interpersonal nature and its social undesirability are discussed. Part II is a selective review of questionnaires that have been used to measure it. The lack of consistency in identified subscales is noted. In Part III, the need to distinguish between dependence as a life-style and as an emotional response to others, and between normal and pathological dependence is emphasized. Pathological dependence is considered to be an expression of insecurity and lack of trust. The measurement of dependence in relation to other interpersonal attributes is recommended.
