Abstract

Basically, this book presents the proceedings of a conference organized by the Section of the History of Medicine of the Royal Society of Medicine in London. The book is composed of 10 single-authored chapters. The contributors adapted their presentations at the conference to provide easy-to-read chapters on the history of pain and its control. The text begins with the first historical records of pain and then follows the development of new treatments throughout the successive years. It also includes a chapter that deals specifically with the management of pain associated with childbirth, both past and present.
