Abstract
The recently introduced Project 2000 curriculum has resulted in a radical alteration in nurse education, culminating in the award of a higher qualification (diploma) on the successful completion of training. The content of Project 2000 courses is obviously under constant review, but the ultimate aim must be to provide the qualified nurse with the necessary knowledge and skills to begin in clinical practice. This involves competency in several subject areas, such as physiology, psychology and sociology, and a sound basic introduction to the use of nursing research. But does this group of subjects cover the main duties expected of a newly qualified staff nurse? I suspect not.
