Abstract
Self estimates of various body widths in terms of the separation between two moving light sources were obtained from patients with anorexia nervosa and a control group of adolescent schoolgirls. Two comparison groups of older women were also studied. A similar inverse linear relationship of decreasing accuracy of self perception with decreasing width of body part was found in both the anorexic and schoolgirl populations. The relationship was less evident in the older subjects. The importance of taking this relationship into account in future studies of self-perception is emphasised and some of its implications discussed.
