Abstract
Total Quality Management is very much in vogue in Western companies today. The drive for quality, however, has often come from an internal, operations bias rather than an external, market focus. This paper discusses the evolution of approaches to quality management, relating developments directly to recognized marketing orienations of companies. It concludes by identifying the role of marketing in leading in the drive to improve quality in the market place.
