Abstract

It is shown that in dense traffic flow a localized structure which is surrounded by an initial homogeneous traffic flow can spontaneously appear. This structure has the form of a "dipole-layer", i.e., it consists of a low and high density, following downstream one after another. The formation process, the structure and the parameters of the local "dipole-layer" are investigated.
