Abstract

This chapter describes the important intercellular interactions required to produce a multicellular organism from a single fertilized egg. Interaction of cells by induction, both by direct cell contact and by molecules that travel over distances is illustrated. Pleiotropic developmental disorders are defined. The difference between determination and differentiation in development is presented. Development is likened to the growth and branching of a tree.
