Opioid peptides (endorphins) were extracted from brains of hypophysectomized rats and sham-operated controls on the 34th post-operative day. There were no significant differences in endorphin content between groups. Evidently, the brain endorphins do not come from the pituitary, but are probably synthesized in the brain.
