The tables in this report present data on cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control by May 26, 1986, of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which has shown a slight downward trend since 1981.

Abstract

The tables in this report present data on cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control by May 26, 1986, of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). As of that date, a total of 21,065 cases (20,771 involving adults and 294 involving children under 18 years of age) had been reported. 11,541 (55%) of AIDS victims have died. The majority of cases in both the adult and pediatric populations have involved Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia without Kaposi's sarcoma. 47% of AIDS cases have occurred in the 30-39-year age group. 60% of adult cases have involved whites, whereas 60% of pediatric cases have involved blacks. Among adults, 79% of AIDS cases have involved homosexual or bisexual men, 15% have involved intravenous drug users, 1% have involved hemophiliacs, 1% have been associated with transfusions, and 5% of cases have not fallen into any of the established risk groups. Among children, the largest percentage (84%) of AIDS cases have been associated with a parent with AIDS. An additional 12% of pediatric AIDS cases have been attributed to blood transfusions. 56% of total AIDS cases have involved individuals from 2 states: New York (33%) and California (23%). The rate of AIDS cases/million population is 92.5 for the US as a whole, but 710.1 in New York City and 677.1 in San Francisco. The case-fatality rate was 23% for the period January-May 26, 1986 and has shown a slight downward trend since 1981.
