Abstract
Although alcohol and drug use and abuse in adolescence has long been a problem, recent attention to prevention, rises in cocaine use, and concern about the spread of AIDS in relation to risk-taking behavior have become a focus of attention for parents, school personnel, law enforcement agencies, and mental health professionals. Our society is faced with the issue of how to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies for young people. This chapter is designed to provide an overview of the problem of adolescent substance abuse, characteristics of those who abuse and their families, in-patient approaches to treatment, and the outcome of those who receive treatment.
