Abstract

Social workers, regardless of their own ethnic background, should appreciate the traditions and culture of the Puerto Rican community to work effectively with Puerto Rican clients. This article looks at traditional parenting styles, the development of self-image, and social customs among Puerto Ricans and suggests how social workers can build a trusting therapeutic relationship with Puerto Rican families.
