Abstract
THE concept of a sodium–potassium linked electrically neutral pump was first put forward by Hodgkin1 for muscle and nerve. He suggested that a potassium ion might be transported into the cell for each sodium ion actively extruded, leading to an electrical neutrality with respect to the operation of the sodium-pump. This idea has been tested in the following experiments.
