Abstract
Rather than distinguishing locality-types by their supposed ' rural' (or ' urban') characteristics, more attention should be devoted to classifications which build on dominant causal processes. An illustrative scheme is presented drawing on O'Connor's competitive, monopoly and state market sectors.
