Psychological Testing and Assessment

Abstract

Given that Muslims in Western countries come from a multitude of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, the psychological assessment of clients in Muslim communities shares many of the same challenges as that of other minority groups. In addition to the in«uences of cultural norms and traditions, religious beliefs and practices may also be important considerations for any clinician conducting an assessment with a Muslim client. Despite these challenges, the psychological assessment of cognitive function, personality, and mood symptoms is important and necessary in addressing the mental health needs of Muslims. With appropriate consideration and accommodation for cultural and religious factors relevant to Muslims, clinicians who are mindful of client and family expectations, testing procedures, and the interpretation of results can e¬ectively carry out such assessments.
