Abstract
Abstract The response of heart size to exercise in the upright position has been measured in 10 normal subjects before and after beta adrenergic blockade with oral pronethalol. Eight subjects had a larger heart size at rest after pronethalol, and by the end of the third minute of exercise all 10 showed increased cardiac dimensions as compared with the control measurements. It is postulated that these changes result from a summation of the effects of beta adrenergic blockade on heart rate and on myocardial contractility.
