Abstract

Pfeffer’s work on resource dependence theory does not appear to have had major roots in prior writings. It is not related to the resource-based view that has its origins in economics (see Barney 2001). Pfeffer labels his autobiography “Taking the Road Less Traveled” (Pfeffer 1996) and describes a process of theory development that represents a break with existing positions. Presumably as a result of this iconoclastic bent, he had difficulty initially getting his theoretical ideas accepted for publication, although his empirical work had much better success. As a result, although the first statements of the theory were contained in his 1971 dissertation, it was not until seven years later that a full and formal published version appeared (Pfeffer and Salancik 1978). This presentation, which now included a collaboration with Gerald Salancik, represents a considerable refinement of the earlier views.
