Abstract
This article investigates the formation of the anorexic and bulimic body within popular women's magazines. Several readings are proposed: firstly, that contemporary femininity is strongly constructed through discourses on eating disorders. Secondly, that an imagined relationship between the female audience and the consumption of idealised (thin) representations of femininity is indicted in the aetiology of eating disorders. Thirdly, that this scientifically sanctioned form of common sense describes women's reception of mass produced texts as perverse and locates the construction of contemporary femininity as a reading disorder. Fourthly, that the anorexic body functions as fetishised feminine monstrosity within the mass media. Lastly, that representations of the anorexic voice have generated a polemic around the issue of 'losing'.
