This monograph is written by an endocrinologist with extensive experience in the clinical and laboratory study of androgen disorders as they pertain to the subject of the hirsute female. In less than 100 pages of text the author presents in a concise and lucid manner the various facets and complexities of this particular problem. In the first four chapters there is discussion of the biosynthesis of the steroid hormones, the laboratory measurement of androgens, and the adrenal cortex and ovary as a source of these androgens. Much valuable information concerning the elaboration of androgens by these steroid producing organs is presented and provides background to the reader for the chapters which follow. Particularly helpful is a discussion of the significance of urinary 17-ketosteroid determinations and of the measurement of testosterone in blood and urine.
