Functional Recovery After Hip Fracture

Abstract

As life expectancy increases worldwide, hip fractures are expected to become an even greater global health problem. The care process of patients with hip fracture starts in the acute settings and continues in both inpatient and outpatient settings to promote recovery post-fracture. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of current known consequences on patients and healthcare systems and future expected changes. It discusses approaches to defining recovery from different stakeholders' perspectives and recent evidence on using an integrated approach to improve recovery rates in different care settings, including the acute care hospital and post-acute settings. The chapter concludes by suggesting several meaningful steps to improve future rehabilitation research after hip fracture.
