Abstract
Right-side-out vesicles of plasma membrane from roots and leaves of the glycophytes Plantago major ssp. major and P. lanceolata and the halophytes P. maritima and P. coronopus were isolated using an aqueous polymer two-phase-system. The properties of plasma membrane ATPase from all four taxa were analyzed. High similarities between the halophyte and gly-cophyte taxa were obtained concerning substrate specificity, requirement for divalent cations, kinetic data, and stimulation by monovalent cations. P. coronopus showed a broader pH optimum of the ATPase than the other taxa. The results are discussed in relation to the literature and with regard to the possible influence of root plasma membrane ATPase on salt tolerance.
