Abstract
The emotional expressions, or displays, of dominance in humans are of interest not only for their own sake but also as indicators of an evolved basis for this behavioral system. If it can be shown that these displays are homologous to those of man's relatives, then additional parallels may also exist between dominance behavior in nonhuman primates and competitive behavior in humans. More specifically, humans' striving for success and avoidance of failure may be motives that evolved from dominance striving in other primates.
