Abstract
After a general review of the matrix model approach to the discretized two-dimensional quantum gravity a model of discretized bosonic strings in the 1D target space is considered in detail. A recently found non perturbative solution is discussed and investigated. Some aspects of this model, such as nonperturbative stability and renormalized physical obervables, are clarified. A compactified (finite temperature) version of this model is shown to be reducible to an integrable N-body problem of Calogero type.

A nonperturbative definition of two-dimensional quantum gravity is proposed, based on a double-scaling limit of the random-matrix model, and an exact differential equation for the partition function ofTwo-dimensional gravity coupled to conformal matter is derived.

The results uncover new difficulties in quantizing and regularizing the Nambu-Goto string and a new class of random surface models with more coercive actions are proposed which are expected to have improved behaviour and appear to be accessible to numerical simulations.
