Abstract Abstract The microcomputer presents an enormous opportunity to improve the professional work of planners. Its expanded use depends on understanding both the computer and the planner's job. Ongoing administrative aspects of planning require the use of geographic information systems, but these do not give sufficient support to the development of long-term plans and objectives. The elements of an appropriate flexible planning system that includes models of spatial interaction are now available and should be used in a computer setting.
