Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss and illustrate by example some logical aspects of tests of significance. In particular, the importance of properly selecting the population or reference set for the test is emphasized. A dilution series example illustrates how considerations of sufficiency may sometimes be used to identify the part of the data which contains the information relevant to the hypothesis being tested.
