Abstract

Tourism seems particularly vulnerable to changes in perception and attitudes toward holiday destinations. Personal safety whilst travelling is very important to some people and as some tourists have perceived a greater risk of HIV infection in countries with increasing prevalence of HIV infection and growing numbers of AIDS cases, tourism in certain countries appears at risk from such perceptions. This study attempted to examine the strength of the relationship between destination choice of New Zealanders and the perceived risk of HIV infection and whether some tourist destinations were more vulnerable to such perceptions.
