Abstract
The sympathetic nervous system and adrenomedullary hormonal system are major components of the autonomic nervous system. The main sympathetic neurotransmitter for cardiovascular regulation is norepinephrine, whereas the main sympathetic neurotransmitter for sweating is acetylcholine. In humans the main adrenomedullary hormone is epinephrine. In contrast with the concept of a unitary "sympathoadrenal" system, the sympathetic noradrenergic and adrenomedullary hormonal systems can be regulated differentially in response to different stressors. The adrenomedullary hormonal system is activated in response to global metabolic stressors and distress.
