Abstract
Wayfinding denotes man's ability to reach spatial destinations in novel as well as in familiar settings. This paper conceptualizes wayfinding in terms of spatial problem solving and identifies three distinct but not necessarily chronological phases: (1) the processing of environmental information from present and past experiences, (2) the making of decisions and the development of plans on the basis of this information with respect to a specific task and (3) the execution of plans and the transformation of decisions into behavioral actions. Outlined are some basic principles of spatial problem solving illustrated by observed wayfinding behavior. It is suggested in the paper that problem-specific wayfinding strategies and user-specific wayfinding styles are common.
