Health and Disease in Four Peruvian Villages. Contrasts in Epidemiology.

Focusing on regional differences--both sociological and ecological--as clues to disease phenomena, a report is given of a study of four villages in Peru, each in a different geographical and climatic region, and each differing from the others in socioeconomic an other characteristics.

Abstract : Focusing on regional differences--both sociological and ecological--as clues to disease phenomena, a report is given of a study of four villages in Peru, each in a different geographical and climatic region, and each differing from the others in socioeconomic an other characteristics. The investigation was carried out by a team of specialists in epidemiology, parasitology, microbiology and immunology, entomology, sanitary engineering, and anthropology. Their research included studies of the distribution of infections and diseases in each village; sources and sanitary quality of the water; waste disposal and housing; insects of public health importance; the health significance of coca chewing; and socioeconomic aspects of each village. New information is presented on treponematoses, arbovirus infections, and medically important insects.
