Abstract
The mean and variance of the noncentral hypergeometric distribution are essential for obtaining maximum likelihood estimates for conditional logistic models for 2 x 2 tables. The numerical difficulty in directly computing them using the definition is discussed in detail by Satten and Kupper (1990). They also give an algorithm based on a continued fraction representation for the mean. We present here another algorithm, based on two equations in Harkness (1965):
