Abstract

In 1983, Karmali et al. reported the association between idiopathic HUS with verotoxin producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), and their findings have now been confirmed by numerous other investigators. Recently developed serodiagnosis for VTEC infection is quite useful, and we found that out of 71 patients with HUS, 40 were positive for the antibody against O157 E. coli LPS. 0111 and 026 E. coli were also implicated as etiologic agents in HUS of Japan.
