TL;DR
The strongest predictor of being compulsorily admitted was the specific psychiatric service the patient was in contact with, followed by having a psychosis diagnosis, while social variables played only a minor role in predicting compulsory care.
Abstract
There was a great variation in rates of compulsory care. No consistent rural-urban pattern in rates of commitment was found. It is discussed whether a formal referral procedure to the psychiatric service is associated with higher rates of compulsory care.

The utilization of the mental health services was studied over a 2‐year period for a cohort of 211 consecutively admitted patients from a catchment area in Oslo to show how psychopathology and sociodemographic factors contributed to the degree of service consumption.

All 517 compulsorily admitted psychiatric patients of a well-defined mixed rural–urban catchment area in Baden-Württemberg, a southern State of the German Federal Republic, were compared with all 10232 voluntarily admitted patients, and the characteristics distinguishing involuntary from voluntary patients can be reduced to three main factors.

The findings suggest that immigrant groups (mainly of West Indian origin) are no more likely than others living in the city centre to become psychiatric hospital in-patients, but when they do so, they are more likely to require compulsory admission.
