Abstract

Retirement is essentially a product of sientific invention and discovery, resulting in changing social roles and in the extension of life beyond the completion of conventional adult responsibilities. Retirement gives rise to serious individual problems which have equally serious social counterparts. Chief among these are the timing of retirement, financial support of the retired, discovery and provision of new roles, maintenance of social contacts and health, and living arrangements.
