Abstract

Abstract The paper examines the influence of map use and map design upon trail use in a recreational area, the Lake O'Hara area, Yoho National Park, Canada. Three test map designs were used and a questionnaire conducted on both map users and non-map users. Map users in general were found to make more use of the trails than those not using maps. Particularly noticeable was the effect of colour; this appeared to be a positive enhancement to both map use and trail use.
